ISM: Manufacturing Is 'Square' With Predicted Growth

June 3, 2014

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in May for the 12th consecutive month, and the overall economy grew for the 60th consecutive month, say the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business.

Manufacturing expanded in May as the PMI registered 55.4 percent, an increase of 0.5 percentage point when compared to April’s reading of 54.9 percent. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting.

“The 55.4 percent is almost square with predictions that are out there,” says Bradley J. Holcomb, CPSM, CPSD, chair of the ISM Business Survey Committee. “So we’re doing what’s expected and what’s expected is a good strong manufacturing sector.” Read More...

Factory Orders Up For Third Month

June 4, 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Orders to U.S. factories rose for a third consecutive month in April, pushed higher by a surge in demand for military hardware. But a key category that signals business investment plans fell.

The Commerce Department says orders increased 0.7 percent in April following a 1.5 percent increase in March and a 1.7 percent gain in February. Those gains followed two big declines in January and December, which partly reflected a harsh winter. A category viewed as a proxy for business investment plans fell by 1.2 percent in April, though that drop came after a 4.7 percent surge in March. Read More...
